Sonsyrea Tate’s statement suggests that “home” may be conceived of as a dwelling, a place, or a state of mind. It may have positive or negative associations, but in either case, it may have a considerable influence on an individual. From The Kite Runner, choose a central character leaves home yet finds that home remains significant. Write a well-developed essay in which you analyze the importance of “home” to this character and the reasons for its continuing influence. Explain how the character’s idea of home illuminates the larger meaning of the work. Do not merely summarize the plot. AP 2010. (700-800 words).

Identify and evaluate at least three components of a “successful” college essay. Use the sources you have read in class, as well as other readings and personal experience, to develop your argument and explain the reasoning for it. Indicate clearly which sources you are drawing from, whether through direct quotations, paraphrase, or summary.

“13 Views”
After reading The Kite Runner, choose a chapter or character from the text and write a poem. Your poem must contain the following:
  • Each stanza will offer a different view of the character or chapter
  • The poem will contain 13 stanzas
  • Each stanza will not be more than 5 lines long
  • Each line should be short; no more than 7 words
If you are writing about a character, you should first brainstorm 13 different characteristics of the character or moments in the text that portray the character in a different light. If you writing about a chapter, it should be 13 different ways a moment(s) could be viewed.

4.) Describe a place or environment where you are perfectly content. What do you do or experience there, and why is it meaningful to you?

5.) Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family.

Synthesis Essay (Honors Only):
A person’s identity is largely shaped by one’s culture and heritage. Choose three of the short stories we have read (excerpt from A Thousand Splendid Suns, excerpt from Americanah, The Confession: Part Two, and/or “Milk Years") and write a synthesis paper explaining the role heritage or culture has on shaping each narrator’s perspective of herself or society.

Hamlet

1.) Pre-decting lines in Hamlet
2.) Using Polonius' speech as a model, write advice to a new student at your school. How do you navigate the social scene? What foods should you avoid in the cafeteria? ( Honors only: 3/4 page)

3.) Step 1: Select a line from the play that he or she finds particularly powerful or central to the play. This line should contain an image you wish to explore.


Step 2: Brainstorm a web for the lines that you choose. Think about the following: What words come to mind when we hear these words? What do the words mean (i.e., How would you define them)? Do the words have any connections to the Bible, mythology, or history? What colors, smells, tastes, sounds, and sights come to mind when you hear these words? When you have filled in several words, try to connect the associations together to see if a general theme, character, or situation emerges. Don’t be afraid to let your imagination take control!

4.)Characters in Hamlet

As we read Hamlet, you will be assigned a character and be responsible for tracking the character. The tracking of your character will count as DJs and you will analyze the character throughout reading the play. You will complete the following while analyzing your assigned character:

  • § Motivation
  • § Personality
  • § Interactions/feelings with other characters
  • § Any important soliloquys or speeches that reveal insight into the character
    • Note: if your character changes, you definitely need to make note of it.

5.)Open response: Which version, overall, did you feel best captured the text? Explain your reasoning with specific examples from all sources. The more specific, the better (Mel Gibson: 1990; Kenneth Brannagh: 1996).


6.) Finish reading Act 1, scene 5. If you are tracking Hamlet or Horatio, you should definitely be adding to your DJs. Also choose a topic for your research paper using the cite below. Remember, it needs to be the same year you were born and on or as close to your birthday as possible.

10.) "Remembrance of Yours"…Analyzing characters using mementos (Folger Shakespeare)

Using your character tracking DJs, you will complete a project on the following:
1.) Creative piece: Create a 3-D symbol for your character (this cannot be a symbol found in the play). You creation should reflect hard work and attention to detail. The symbol should be original and accurately illustrates your characters, as a whole.
2.) Written piece: a detailed explanation how the symbol connects with your character; 5 quotations from the play, with an explanation, on the relation of the symbol to the character.
